CityRAP Tool reaching Portuguese speaking countries

Lusophone countries in Africa build capacity on urban resilience through participatory approach with DiMSUR

Portuguese speaking countries in Africa were one of the focuses of the CityRAP Tool in 2016. All the material and workshops related to the training of trainers on the CityRAP methodology were translated and adapted to Portuguese during the past year.

The work from DiMSUR and UN-Habitat team by developing and delivering the high-quality trainings enabled around 100 professionals and technicians from São Tomé and Principe, Cape Verde and Guinea-Bissau to build capacity on urban resilience, disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation. Trainees are now able to implement the CityRAP Tool in their own cities or neighbourhoods and develop their Resilience Framework for Action.

Participants of the training of trainers are mainly professionals and technicians from municipal staff. The trainings aimed at having gender and age balance between the trainees selected.

Delivered trainings

Guinea-Bissau

Twenty-five technicians from ministries and secretaries from the central government; municipal staff from Bissau, the region from Bafata, and other parts of the country; and other local architects and urban planners attended a one-week training about the CityRAP methodology.

“The training in Guinea-Bissau focused on climate change because it is an insular country with a lot of coastal areas, with around 90 islands. It is extremely vulnerable to the sea level rise”, says Luis Felipe Lopes, from UN-Habitat and DiMSUR team in Mozambique.

Cape Verde

Third-five technicians from local and central administration, representatives from municipal councils, and professionals from civil society learned about the CityRAP Tool methodology and implementation in November 2016. The training was conducted in partnership with UN-Habitat Cape Verde, UN-Habitat Mozambique and DiMSUR in the city of Praia.

“This is a regional project for the Lusophone countries aiming at developing local capacities and building a hub of Cape Verdean professionals who know the local realities to work in their own cities with the communities to include urban resilience in their development plans”, explained Janice Silva Coordinator at UN-Habitat Cape Verde.
